About the Food Charter development process:

Timeline

Activity

August 2011

Megan Jacquith, a MPH student completed the report: An Assessment of Canadian Food Charters. The purpose of the report was to provide recommendations on the best methods for the development and implementation of a Food Charter.

September- November 2011

The KFL&A HEWG began preparing for the development of a Food Charter for the region, by looking to various documents such as:

  • The Food Down the Road Local Food Summit Declaration (January 2008)
  • An Assessment of Canadian Food Charters
  • Compilation of Canadian Food Charters

December 2011- March 2012

The KFL&A HEWG created drafts of the Food Charter, using the supportive documents listed above.

March- June 2011 2012

The KFL&A HEWG hosted stakeholder and community consultation sessions to gather feedback on the Food Charter.

July- August 2012

The KFL&A HEWG reviewed the stakeholder and community consultation feedback and made revisions to the Food Charter document. A final Food Charter document was created (see the attached document).

What are the next steps?

In late September, the KFL&A HEWG will be seeking endorsement of the Food Charter from the Kingston, Frontenac and Lennox & Addington Board of Health.

Over the months of October to December 2012, the KFL&A will be seeking endorsement of the Food Charter from the municipal councils within the City of Kingston, County of Frontenac and County of Lennox and Addington.

We look forward to continuing to update you on the progress of the KFL&A Food Charter.

What is a Food Charter?
A Food Charter is a document that represents the communities’ voice, values and priorities for a healthy and self-reliant food system. It promotes the development of food initiatives and policy within the communities, organizations and at the local government level.

How will a Food Charter benefit KFL&A?
- Promotes a healthy and self-reliant food system
- Promotes local food, farmers and farm land
- Encourages adequate, nutritious, safe, affordable and culturally acceptable food for all
- Strengthens community and culture
- Helps to protect the environment
